Maren Vale knows the way home. Past the railroad tracks. Past the yellow house. Off the bus in time to meet her eight-year-old brother, Theo.

Today, the yellow house is missing. The brakes don’t work. And Mrs. Keene’s route card lists streets that shouldn’t exist.

Beyond the windows, tidy houses have no back walls. Empty porches call the children by name. Every stop offers a reason to get off. One wrong step can leave a rider behind.

To reach the real town, Maren and the other children must finish five impossible stops, in order. They have a handful of rules, a driver fighting for control, and less time than the sky wants them to believe.

At five thirty, Theo’s library closes. He’ll start walking home alone.

Maren has to be at the corner.

The bus has other plans.
